The Trojan girls golf team has been playing with only five of their six possible slots filled all season, but they had to play with only four at the Southeast Conference tournament Monday while a member handled an academic issue.

“We played short-handed today and that hurt us in the long run,” shared Head Coach Joe Kruzich. He added, “I think that Keokuk was there for the taking today, we just weren’t at full strength and we did what we could playing with some girls that are injured and still getting their first season under their belt. I wasn’t disappointed, I just felt like at full strength we would have had a chance at third and it’s too bad we couldn’t offer that.”

Sophomore Megan Higgins shot a 109 to lead the Trojans with senior Joli Swan right behind with a 112. Tenth-graders Ella Phillips and Lindy Kaska shot 141 and 146, respectively, and Fairfield had to take two 198 scores that left them out of any real contention.

“We still have our goals that we set at the beginning of the season,” said Kruzich. “Joli Swan still wants to get lower with her scores. Megan Higgins, same thing. The season is by far not finished yet, we just want to finish on the best possible note that we can.”

Washington claimed the team crown with a ridiculous 315 with their scores ranging from 72 to 98, and their top five golfers took first through fifth on the podium with Mt. Pleasant junior Annie Liechty sliding into sixth with a 95.

Kruzich put things in perspective as a high school head coach.

“My goal right now is to make sure these girls have developed a love for the game of golf and that they’ll keep coming back in the future.”

The Trojans will compete in regionals Monday at Emeis Golf Course in Davenport against Assumption, Center Point-Urbana, Central DeWitt, Keokuk, Maquoketa, Marion, Mt. P, Notre Dame, Solon, Washington and West Liberty.
