The Fairfield girls’ tennis team swept Davis County in singles play and rolled to its largest victory of the season Thursday, blasting Davis County 7-2 at the Fairfield Middle School courts.

Thursday’s meet win was the second in a row for the suddenly surging Trojan girls, who had been coming off a 6-3 rout of Albia on Monday. And on Thursday, most of the match wins weren’t even close.

Rachel Hathaway, a senior, earned Fairfield’s most lopsided victory of the night, defeating Davis County’s Diedra Rudd 8-0 at No. 4 singles.

Senior teammates Haylee Gilpin and Courtney Laux and sophomore Karley Williams each won 8-1. Gilpin steamrolled Megan Joos at No. 1 while Laux made quick work of Abi Heckethorn in the five hole. Williams defeated Janel Fenton at No. 2 for her third straight 8-1 win in singles play.

Kim O’Carroll, another Trojan senior, also won in dominating fashion at No. 3 singles and claimed an 8-2 victory, and senior Hanna Kerr secured the singles sweep by pulling out an 8-6 win at No. 6.

The two wins Davis County reeled off in doubles action proved much too little and too late. Gilpin and O’Carroll each earned their second win on the day teaming up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-4 win over Joos and Davidson. Williams and Hathaway fell in a tiebreaker 10-8.

The Trojans also defeated the visiting Mustangs 5-1 in JV doubles matches.

Fairfield’s No. 4 doubles team Meghan Shelangoski and Madison Soupiset again dominated and picked up an 8-3 win, and Emma Lemlin and Harley Cook rolled to a 8-4 win at No. 5. Abby Shaner and Sierra Simmons defeated the Mustangs’ No. 6 team 8-2, Caitie Johnson and Bryana earned an 8-3 win at No. 7 doubles and No. 9 duo Ashlee Hardeman and Eden Bell ran away with an 8-3 victory.

Fairfield is at the Burlington Invitational on Saturday.
