Trojan golfers are 20-7

By JOE KRUZICH, Head coach, FHS girls' golf | May 10, 2017

We go to Copper Creek up in Pleasant Hill for a 13-team invitational on Thursday.

We started the season 13-0 after a few duals and triangulars and then had a big win at the Mid-Prairie Invitational at Kalona Country Club.

We improved on our opening nine holes by 18 strokes on the backside to rally and win by one stroke with a team total of 398 to Wilton’s 399.

Olivia Hammel placed third individually with a 92 and Kylee Marlay placed sixth with a 97.

Since then we have struggled to be consistent, but have had great practices and I feel like we are getting back on track.

The team shot 411 down at the Preserve at Rathbun Lake on May 4 to take fifth in the 11-team event. Olivia tied for fourth place with an 88 and Kylee finished in ninth place with a 92.

Since the beginning of the season I have seen some ups and downs, but I believe that our team balance is still there. Olivia and Kylee are consistently shooting lower scores.

Taylor Marlay and Joli Swan, while hitting a bit of slump of late, seem to be coming out of it. They have both had practice rounds in the 40s the last couple of days.

Finally, Kaelyn Strong and Megan Higgins have shown great improvement. Kaelyn is beginning to creep into the low 50s after struggling to break 60 much of last season and Megan has already improved her nine-hole score by 17 strokes. As a freshman, I can’t express how hard Megan has worked to get better.

All in all, the girls have a record of 20-7, are ranked eighth in the state in Class 4A and have a great chance to pick up some momentum going into our conference and regional meets, with a chance to qualify for a third straight state tournament.

As always, our conference is incredibly competitive with Washington and Mt. Pleasant, so it should be a fun homestretch to see how it all plays out.
