Trojan golfers pick up win No. 1 to open season

Apr 09, 2013

OSKALOOSA — Led by junior Matt Carr, the Trojan boys’ golf team opened the season Monday with a dominant, 43-stroke victory over host Eddyville-Blakesburg at Harvest Point in Oskaloosa.

The Trojans shot a 156 compared to the host Rockets’ 199.

“It’s great to get the season under way and with a 156, that is really good. We’ll take that anytime,” said Fairfield head coach Mick Flattery. “The guys were really ready to play.”

Carr carded a 37 and tallied two of the Trojans’ four birdies on the day to take meet medalist honors, while junior teammate Alex Shier had the other two birdies and was two strokes behind (39) to claim runner-up medalist honors. Both experienced golfers played the par-5 holes at 2-under.

The most pleasant surprise, however, might have been the performance of freshman Nick Higgins, who began his high school career by parring hole No. 1 en route to a round of 40. The rookie was just 2-over-par on par-3 holes and played the par-5s even.

“He parred the first hole and went on to shoot a very good score,” Flattery said of Higgins. “What a great way to start his career; he had one bad shot all day.”

Fairfield junior Landon Gamrath also shot a 40 to complete the team’s score. Gamrath was “really confident with his swing,” said Flattery, to finish even-par on par-5 holes.

Junior Joe Hietpas and senior Gabe Hull entered the clubhouse after shooting alternate scores of 42 and 44, respectively. Hietpas was only 2-over-par on par 3s, and both golfers were 2-over on par 5s.

Overall, the Trojan varsity boys played the par 3-holes at plus-15, par-4s at plus-17 and par-5s at even-par.

“Having all the varsity guys shooting under 44 was really good. I thought the guys really played the course strategically smart for the first time of the year,” Flattery added. “Wise club selections and taking their medicine when needed and going for the stick when the opportunity was there.”

In JV action, the Trojans continued their consistent play across the board with Jon Anderson and Ben Hull both shooting a 45.

The Trojans (1-0) continue their packed start to the season at the Albia Invite today.
