“As long as you get there, I suppose it doens’t matter how,” said Fairfield head softball coach Bob Bradfield after a dramatic come-from-behind 6-4 victory at Oskaloosa Saturday night.

After allowing a run in the second and three more in the third, Fairfield finally scored a run in the top of the sixth to make it 4-1, but even with two on and two outs in their final chance to bat the Trojans still needed at least three runs and a miracle.

First, Shay Drish drew a walk to load the bags before Allison Rebling reached with a two-run hit that made it 4-3.

Ashtyn Drish then tied it at four with a base hit, followed by an intentional walk of Hannah Simpson that brought Lily Hoskins to the plate with the game tied.

Hoskins then hit a routine grounder to second that could have ended rally, but the fielder kicked the ball around and allowed two runs to score giving the Trojans a “What just happened?” 6-4 advantage.

Rebling closed out the game for the victory, allowing four runs total, three earned, on five hits and four walks while striking out six.

Allison was also 2-3 from the plate with the aforementioned two RBI. Simpson was the only other Fairfielder to hit safely multiple times, going 2-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Next the Trojans will travel to No. 6 Newton to face the Cardinals Tuesday at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the state tournament as the Class 4A Region 5 champion.
