Lunsford will attend Hannibal-LaGrange University where he will continue his wrestling career as a collegiate student-athlete.

Fairfield’s Brendon Lunsford finished the 2018 IHSAA State Wrestling Championships with a 4-2 record in the Class 2A 285 pound bracket with his two losses coming to the second and third place finishers.

Lunsford started the tournament with a loss by fall 2:28 into his match with Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Spencer Trenary who finished his junior season with a record of 50-5 and was the state runner-up after losing a 7-6 decision in the final to John McConkey from Atlantic-CAM who went 57-1 while claiming the state crown.

The Trojan senior then rebounded with a 6-4 decision over sophomore Derrin Sesker from Van Meter/Earlham to keep his tournament alive and continue on to day 2 Friday.

Lunsford’s third match was a pin over South Hardin-BCLUW senior Ryne Fuller who had his season ended with a record of 34-16 after losing in the quarterfinals of the winners bracket before losing consecutive matches to be eliminated.

Bout four for Lunsford was his third consecutive elimination match and pitted the Trojan versus Webster City senior Cooper Lawson who entered the contest with only two losses against 45 victories. None of that fazed the seasoned senior from Fairfield who pinned Lawson in just 1:21 to set up a rematch with 38-1 Solon senior Tyler Linderbaum who will attend the University of Iowa in the fall on a football scholarship.

Linderbaum stopped Lunsford’s winning streak at three with a 4-0 decision. Linderbaum then collected his 38th win of the season with a 7-3 victory against 26-5 Dubuque Wahlert senior Blake Bradley in the third place match.

Although Lunsford had suffered his second loss, he had wrestled his way into the fifth place match where he defeated 43-9 sophomore Kobe Clayborne from Bishop Heelan Catholic in Sioux City in a 3-2 decision.

Lunsford continued a long, proud tradition of success for Fairfield at the state wrestling tournament. The Trojan senior is the first fifth-place finisher since Seth Davison and Fairfield Head Coach Steve Miller said, “Brendon wrestled a lot of quality competition this season which helped prepare him,” and “He made the most of a tough draw, and it was great to see him bounce back from his first loss with three straight wins to get into the place matches.”

Miller added that he was, “pleased that Brendon was rewarded for his hard work, because this sports can be unfriendly to great athletes. He put in the training and the weight lifting work and it paid off.”

Lunsford finished 41-5 and will continue his career at Hannibal-LaGrange University.
