FORT DODGE — The Fairfield softball team was down to their last three outs in Wednesday’s Class 4A seventh-place game, but the Trojans were not about to go back home without a win.

After falling 4-0 to Carlisle in their first consolation game, the Trojans staged a seventh-inning comeback to upend Sergeant Bluff-Luton

Trailng 5-4 against SB-L in the seventh, Kenady Waugh stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out. Shay Drish came home to score and Ashtyn Drish followed her sister to the plate on a Warrior error.

The Trojans would tack on one more run when Kaylee Watson, who already had a solo home run in the contest, reached the plate to make it 7-5. The Trojan defense closed it out in the bottom of the seventh and finished their 2017 season with a win.

Fairfield might not have been in a situation to win it, however, if it weren’t for a defensive gem in the bottom of the sixth.

After SB-L had taken a 5-4 lead, the Warriors attempted to put a squeeze play on to tack on one more run. Catcher Sara Trent scooped up the ball and made a diving tag to get the second out of the inning.

“That was a great play by Sara,” Coach Bob Bradfield said about the out. “She went out and fielded the bunt and then had the skill to, in one motion, turn around backwards and tag the runner. That was a play I’d never seen before.”

Brynna Bowman, who came in to relieve Allison Rebling, picked up the win on the mound, and also had an RBI double in the game.

Fairfield’s win was a nice rebound after a 4-0 loss in their first game of the day. S. Drish went 4-4 in the loss to Carlisle. Trent was 2-4, and Bowman, Watson and Waugh each had one hit.

The win marked the final game for a core of seniors that was a part of three straight trips to Ft. Dodge. Waugh, Bowman, Natalie Angstead, Watson and Haley Beard all played their last game in a Trojan uniform.

“We had never been to state three times in a row (and) these seniors were a big part in doing that,” Bradfield said. “We’ve had other players that were major contributors in those other state tournaments but the core of this senior class has basically been there for all three of them. Congratulations to them, and also thanks to their parents because in order for all the stuff to take place, the parents have to be there every step of the way.”

Carlisle finished fifth in Class 4A. Mt. Pleasant was sixth, and SB-L wound up behind Fairfield in eighth place. Oskaloosa, Winterset, Charles City and Ballard will all take the field today for the semifinals, with first and third place games being played on Friday, July 21.

The Trojans finished the year 34-11.
