The Fairfield boys’ golf team will get the chance to move on to districts after winning sectionals Friday at The Preserve on Lake Rathbun in Moravia.

The Trojans finished second at sectionals last season to Centerville, but this time around the roles were reversed. Fairfield’s final tally consisted of 303 strokes, and the team only needed 142 strokes to make it through the front nine. Four Trojans shot in the 70s.

Second place Centerville shot a 312 (last year Centerville won 302-312 over Fairfield) and Oskaloosa scored a 336. Mt. Pleasant, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Davis County and Chariton completed the sectional tournament field.

“Any time you have four guys in the 70s that’s usually a good thing for the team,” Fairfield coach Mick Flattery said. “And it’s that time of year that the teams wanting to keep advancing usually need at least four in the 70s.”

Nick Higgins led the Trojans by shooting a 73 (par is 72). Higgins challenged the other No.1 golfers, such as Kiley Miller of Mt. Pleasant and Centerville’s Alex Moorman, the entire afternoon. The four birdies Higgins made is evidence that his putting game was at its highest level.

Matt Carr shot a 74 and knocked in five of Fairfield’s 10 birdies. Alex Shier scored a 77 and drilled one birdie. Joe Hietpas got a 79, Landon Gamrath shot an 83, and Dillon Shelby carded an 89.

Higgins, Carr, Shier and Hietpas each improved their scores from last year’s sectionals with another year of experience behind them.

The Trojans (58-10) will compete again at regionals at Stone Creek Golf Course in Williamsburg on Friday. Williamsburg, Central Dewitt and Centerville will join them. The top two teams will advance to state, unless Williamsburg is one of those at the top. Then three teams will advance because of Williamsburg’s home golf course advantage.

This was the case at districts last season, when the same four teams competed. Fairfield finished fourth but was just two strokes away from a state tournament berth.
