WILTON — The Trojan baseball team put up big numbers in the late innings to pull away from No. 3-ranked in 2A Wilton Thursday night on the road.

Fairfield led 2-0 going into the fifth inning. The Trojans scored four that inning, two the next and five in the final frame. Wilton made some noise by scoring four in the bottom of the inning, but it was too little, too late.

Head coach Josh Allison said the boys did a great job of dealing with adversity, referring to two regular starters not being in the lineup.

“Defensively, Hunter Drish ran down two balls in the gaps to save some runs for us,” he said. “Graham [Kuehl] did a great job of keeping the hitters off balance.”

Kuehl earned the victory by hurling six innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Jimmy Kurka pitched the seventh and allowed one run on two hits and a walk.

“Offensively, Tristin Waugh came through with some clutch two-out hits,” Allison said.

Waugh went 3-4 with a double and five runs batted in. Cam Baumann was 2-4 with an RBI, a steal and three runs. Brandon Smithburg went 2-4 with a double and a run. Hunter Hoskins went 2-4 with two steals and two runs. Cade Lisk had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice. James Lyman doubled and scored.

The Trojans’ record improves to 23-10 with the victory. They will finish the regular season next week, beginning with a home tilt against Grinnell Monday, followed by a road contest against Oskaloosa Tuesday.

For both games, the junior varsity will play first at 5:30 p.m. Varsity games are expected to start at about 7:30 p.m.
