Trojans fall twice to budding rivals

The Fairfield softball team lost two tough, two-run games Saturday in Oskaloosa against Iowa City Liberty and Louisa-Muscatine.

Exactly a week after losing 10-1 to the Lightning in the semifinals of the Fairfield Invitational, which Liberty went on to win, the Trojans were shutout in a two-hitter that saw only senior Ashtyn Drish and sophomore Destiny Gridley hit safely with each reaching on singles along with eighth-grader Hannah Simpson drawing a walk, although none of the three succeeded in scoring.

Sophomore Allison Rebling threw a complete game three-hitter, allowing two runs over seven innings, one of which was earned, while striking out eight and walking four.

Fairfield lost a 6-4 game of cat and mouse in game two against Class 2A’s No. 5 Louisa-Muscatine who boasts a 21-4 record after going 1-1 Saturday thanks to a 3-2 game one loss to Class 3A’s No. 2 Albia.

L-M started the scoring when the scored a run in the home-half of the second, although Fairfield was able to tie it in the next half-inning when they scored in the top of the third to make it 1-1.

L-M responded with runs in the bottom of the third, but the Trojans answered with two of their own in the top pf the fourth to leave it 3-3 until Fairfield broke the tie in the top of the sixth.

Unfortunately, L-M got three across the plate in their next at-bat and closed out the Trojans in the top of the seventh for the 6-4 victory.

Sophomores Shay Drish and Destiny Gridley led the team with two hits each while Simpson drew a walk.

Rebling reached on a walk and sophomore Grace Stever went 0-1 with two walks

A. Drish took the loss, going six innings and allowing four runs on four hits.

The 10-13 Trojans will now head to Washington for a doubleheader tonight.
