Trojans fired up for conference meet

Fairfield senior Brynna Bowman, a highly talented sprinter, has never competed in the long jump.

“But I’ll be doing that event this Thursday,” she said. “We need to pick up points anywhere we can get them.”

Mt. Pleasant High School will host the Southeast Conference Track and Field Championship on Thursday.

On Monday, due to inclement weather, Fairfield was forced to cancel its own meet.

“But our team still practiced very hard,” Bowman said.

“We feel Thursday’s meet is very important. We want to be prepared. Some teams, when a meet is cancelled, just take the day off and don’t practice — but that’s not us. We used the day to work hard and get further prepared for Mt. Pleasant.”

“Our key for Thursday’s SEC meet is to be focused,” said Trojan girls’ head coach Jerrod Belzer. “Mt. Pleasant is a solid team and we know that if we’re going to beat them it’s going to come down to being one place better in certain races, a few inches in the field events, better hand-offs, etc.

“We have to take care of the little things and then be willing to go out and earn it. Which collective team wants it more is really the question. If we compete to the fullest of our abilities, we know we can beat them. We’re really well-rounded and it’s been great to see so many girls competing at a high level lately. Our juniors and seniors have been great leaders for us all season. Brynna Bowman, Jada Lippincott and Sam Fritz always stand out for their leadership.

“But then we have a lot of others that are performing so well. Danae Drish and Carly Ferrel are a couple underclassmen that have stood out. They’re both starting to come around and run at a high level for us. From a coaching standpoint, it’s great to see this entire group performing well at this time of the season.”

The Trojan boys’ team will be led by senior thrower Michael Fritz, who is having an outstanding season. In the discus throw, his signature event, Fritz has won some meets by over 20 feet.

“We want to go to Mt. Pleasant and have our best meet of the season,” said Trojan boys’ head coach Brian Dunlap. “May is our most important month and hopefully we are at our best when our best is needed.

“We have seen a lot of season bests the past couple weeks. Giuseppi Smith improved 4 inches in the high jump. Mark Diers and Darren Roberts have continued to lead the distance crew, and Fritz has been real consistent in the discus.

“We are going to need a lot of season bests to compete in our league and district meets.”
