Tuesday the Trojans travel to Eldridge to face No. 4 North Scott in the regional finals with a trip to the state tournament on the line.

The Fairfield girls’ basketball team defeated the habitual thorn-in-their-side Keokuk 47-25 Saturday night in front of a raucous crowd that included an amped up boys team that rarely gets to cheer audibly for their female counterparts.

The game itself was ugly. Like, “Look at that trainwreck!” ugly. Fairfield barely shot 32 percent overall, but were the dominant team because seven of the 12 field goals they did make were three-pointers as they somehow shot 47 percent from the perimeter.

The first quarter went by fast as Fairfield outscored the Chiefs 8-7 before both teams stopped making baskets and went nearly an entire quarter without scoring. Finally, the Trojans went on a 5-0 run in a :10 span that gave the home team a 13-7 advantage and seemed to put the opponent away although the game wasn’t even half over. Fairfield added three more points in the final three minutes to take a 16-7 lead into the locker room and knowledge that they just completely shut out thier opponents for an entire eight minutes plus a big chunk of the previous quarter.

Both teams did better offensively in the third period with the Trojans holding a 13-10 edge in scoring over the Chiefs during the quarter, extending their lead to 29-17 heading into the fourth.

Fairfield then pulled away by outscoring Keokuk 18-8 for the 22 point victory and a date with No. 4 North Scott Tuesday at Eldridge in the Class 4A Region 5 final with a trip to the state tournament on the line.

Stat lines were: Ashtyn Drish 17 points on 5-7 shooting including 4-4 from deep, five rebounds, two steals and an assist; Nicole Buch 12 points including 7-8 from the foul line, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists; Shay Drish six points and four rebounds; Ashley Bloomquist five points and six rebounds; Kara Jeffrey five points and six rebounds; and Malory Jones two points and two rebounds.
