Monday evening, Fairfield High School hosted the Brookhart-Crew Relays with the boys and girls track teams from Mt. Pleasant, Washington, Fort Madison, Davis County and Centerville joining the Trojans on their senior night.

Long ago, the event was called the Trojan Relays according to Ron Hunerdosse who said the relays were renamed for longtime FHS Principal Gordon Brookhart when he passed away in the 1980s. A few years ago when Lee Crew died, the school decided to add his name to the night and we now have the Brookhart-Crew Relays, an event Crew’s son Steve thinks his father would enjoy.

“He would be very pleased with the outcome of the meet,” said Steve. “His first love was track. I pretty much grew up on the track with my dad. We lived across the street right on the East side of the track and as kids we always went to practice with dad. My brother and myself were also on the team.”

Lee Crew not only ran for FHS in high school. but he ran against Brookhart before the pair met at Northern Iowa.

It was also senior night for the Trojans with the school honoring their twelfth-graders, including Darren J. Roberts who passed away February 20.

“These four girls have meant a lot to this program,” said Head Coach Jerrod Belzer. “Just their work ethic and leadership they bring. This is a group that I coached when I was still coaching middle school track and I’ve been with them for four years at the high school and it’s tough to see them leave.”

Belzer also reflected on Roberts, a member of his varsity cross country team.

“We miss the kid, obviously on the track, but you miss seeing him at practice and just having him around. He’s definitely a kid that left a legacy and had a lot of very close friends. It was nice to see him honored and his parents to come for that.”
