The Fairfield girls’ swimming team competed in a triangular Thursday against Oskaloosa and host school Ottumwa in their first meet of the season.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Fairfield placed fourth with a time of 2:54.95. On that team were Emily McAvan, Tea Harris, Danielle Elliott and Tessa Seibert.

The other relay the Trojans competed in was the 200-yard freestyle composed of McAvan, Erica Olson, Kyra Hunter and Harris. That team placed fourth with a time of 2:36.28.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Elliott placed second with a time of 2:37.22. Seibert was fifth with a time of 2:49.54.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Seibert touched the wall at 36.24, good for fourth place. Kyra Hunter was sixth with a time of 41.49.

In the 100-yard freestyle for junior varsity, McAvan had the best time at 1:27.61.

Elliott received a bronze medal for her 1:07.64 time in the 100-yard freestyle at the varsity level.

Erica Olson swam the marathon 500-yard freestyle. She placed third with a time of 8:01.67.

Assistant swim coach Brittany Winslow said the team is still green, but the girls have tremendous potential.

“The ladies did great for their first meet,” she said. “All of them shaved time off their practice times.”

Fairfield activities director Jeff Courtright announced that the swim team will not compete at the Marshalltown Swim Invite on Sept. 16 as previously planned.
