Trojans lose, prepare for playoffs

By Justin Webster | Jul 10, 2018

Fairfield High’s baseball team lost 11-1 Monday night at Class 4A’s No. 6 Indianola (31-3) that features an all-senior roster with the exception of two bench players.

After the Trojans failed to score in their first at-bat, the Indians explosive offense got started when senior Joe Jensen smacked the first pitch he saw for a two-run single before Indianola added another run to take a decisive 3-0 lead after one inning.

Indianola’s Reif, Moran, Berkey and Held all recorded RBI in the third inning during a seven-run outburst that left the Trojans trailing 10-0.

Fairfield finally scored in the top of the fifth when Jimmy Kurka was credited with an RBI after Kosta Papazoglou crossed the plate.

Unfortunately, the Indians scored the 11th and final time in the home half of the frame to end the ball game after just five innings.

Papazoglou was the only Trojan to hit safely multiple times, although Cade Lisk, Cooper Drish and Hunter Hoskins did account for the other three Fairfield hits.

Jack Weaton threw 30 pitches and took the loss, going one-plus innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on one hit and three walks.

James Lyman tossed the next 50 pitches for Fairfield, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on four hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Next was Brittan Bowman who went one-plus innings and allowed five runs, all earned, on four hits and two walks over 39 pitches.

Noah Stone closed out the contest with 10 pitches for the Trojans and recorded zero outs while walking two with the 11th and final run scoring, but officially counting against Bowman’s ERA.

Fairfield is now 27-8 overall with the regular season finale scheduled for tonight against Oskaloosa with the first pitch at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the middle school.

The game follows the junior varsity contest that begins at 5:30 p.m.

Playoffs

Regardless of what happens tonight, the Trojans will host 5-19 Fort Madison in the Class 3A substate 5, district 10 baseball semifinals Friday following the Washington versus Iowa City Liberty game that begins at 5 p.m.

The winner between the Demons and the Lightning will face the Fairfield/Fort Madison winner on Monday, July 16 at 7 p.m. at the Fairfield middle school in the district 9 final.

The substate 5 final for a trip to the state tournament will take place on Wednesday, July 18 at Solon with the No. 5 Spartans likely to survive their bracket that pairs them first against 7-29 Keokuk and then the winner of the Mt. Pleasant/Clear Creek-Amana matchup.
