FORT MADISON — The Trojans had a good showing at Fort Madison’s cross-country meet Thursday in Rodeo Park.

The girls came in third with 68 points, trailing Fort Madison with 52 and the winners, Mt. Pleasant, with 44. Washington got 76 and Burlington finished with 112.

The boys also came in third, with 71 points.

Mt. Pleasant won this race, too, with 40 points, followed by Fort Madison with 67. Burlington had 77 and Washington had 88.

Ashley Bloomquist challenged for the title, running neck-and-neck with Fort Madison’s Sierra Howardson. In the end, Howardson was just a little bit faster as she broke the tape at 19:47, with Bloomquist nipping her heels in 19:59.

Other finishers for Fairfield were: Yana Gaskell, fifth, 21:22; Hailey Pohren-Gevock, 14th, 23:26; Malory Jones, 19th, 24:05; Destiny Gridley, 28th, 25:01; Nicole Buch, 32nd, 26:13; and Claire Epperson, 34th, 26:45.

Running for the junior varsity were: Ella Pollet, ninth, 26:43; and Devon Duke, 27th, 43:01.

As he has all year, Mark Diers set the tone for the boys with a time of 18:04, good for seventh. Other finishers were: Darren Roberts, 14th, 18:48.8, just one-tenth of a second faster than teammate Dalton Rippey; Gannon Courtright, 17th, 18:52; Alex Forrest, 18th, 18:54; Bryan Wilkins, 23rd, 19:21; and Dylan Harvey, 24th, 19:40.

The junior varsity runners were: Blake Holden, fourth, 20:21; Jakob Watson, sixth, 20:39; Shane Morrissey, eighth, 20:42; Brecken Courtright, 11th, 21:23; Connor Ryan 13th, 21:52; Aidan Daugherty, 18th, 22:24; Jonah Cooper, 24th, 22:56; Tommy Jones, 41st, 24:26; Jackson Brown 45th, 24:57; and Toby Oliver, 50th, 25:21.

Coach Jerrod Belzer said he was pleased with the times turned in Thursday.

"Gannon is back and starting to get stronger, which adds a lot of confidence to our varsity squad," he said. "They know that if they run their best race they can catch Fort Madison. Dalton Rippey and Darren Roberts really stood up and had good races last night as well. I have to give our JV boys a lot of credit, too. They're running well and continuing to improve. Blake Holden, Jake Watson and Brecken Courtright are three freshman on JV right now who will be strong varsity runners down the road. Yana Gaskell had a great night for the girls. She's competing against some great individual runners and putting up nice times each and every meet."

The cross-country team’s next meet is at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Mt. Pleasant.
