The Fairfield baseball team earned a boost in slugging percentage and in the win column when it defeated Mid-Prairie 11-3 Tuesday at Fairfield Middle School.

Out of 11 hits, the Trojans drilled five doubles and two home runs in what became the fifth victory in their last six games. Both home runs and one of the two-baggers was hit by senior Austin Gridley, who used the short (yet tall) porch in right field to his advantage. Gridley now has eight home runs on the year, which leads the Trojans and is one of the highest totals in the state.

Mid-Prairie (9-19) was overmatched from the start. Fairfield knocked in eight runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead. Jordan Reid, who has taken over playing shortstop and the leadoff spot in the batting order because of Narendra Martin’s injury, scored during the rally.

“Jordan started the season in the leadoff spot, so it’s not too difficult of a transition for him,” Fairfield coach Josh Allison said. “He is a good gap to gap hitter with good speed and instincts, [therefore] a good player for the leadoff spot.”

Alex Christensen, Joe Hietpas, Mason Ellis and Kooper Dahlstrom each hit a double. Dahlstrom drove in two runs, while Hietpas, Cameron Baumann and Alex Crile each drove in one.

“Gridley, Crile, [Micah] Harris, Christensen, and Hietpas are all starting to find their swings,” Allison said. “If we get all those guys swinging well at once and peaking at the right time, our offensive lineup becomes dangerous.”

Justin Leonard and Harris split time on the mound and combined for just two earned runs over seven innings. Harris struck out two in his 3 1/3 innings.

Class 3A No. 5 Fairfield (22-7, 10-3 SEC) still has a Southeast Conference doubleheader at Washington to play Thursday. The IHSAA Class 3A playoff bracket has been released, and Fairfield will take on Fort Madison (2-27) in the first round of district on July 18. Oskaloosa (16-11) against Mt. Pleasant (14-13) is the other matchup in the Trojans’ bracket.
