Monday night was a great night for Fairfield’s seniors.

The seniors on the baseball team were recognized for their contributions through the years. The Trojans capped off the festivities with a 7-2 win against visiting Grinnell.

A pair of seniors, Tyler Cooksey and Spencer Peterman, shined brightly as they each collected three hits. Cooksey doubled, scored a run and drove in one. Peterman scored twice and had two stolen bases.

Cooksey got the ball rolling in the first inning when he singled home Josh Dimmitt. Mason Ellis was able to score on the play as well.

In the second, Ryan Gaumer walked and advanced to third on Peterman’s single. Joseph Hietpas singled to score Gaumer. Peterman and Hietpas scored later that inning on Josh Dimmitt’s two-run base hit.

Peterman singled again in the fourth, then proceeded to steal second and third base. He scored when Josh Dimmitt reached on the third baseman’s fielding error.

Cooksey was at it again in the fifth when he doubled with one out and advanced to third on Austin Gridley’s single. He came around to score on a balk.

Josh Dimmitt had a nice game as he went 2-3 with two RBIs, a run, a walk and a steal. Ellis scored a run and swiped two bases.

Hietpas started and earned the victory. He pitched 3.2 innings while giving up one unearned run on three hits and a walk to complement seven punchouts. Wyatt Stark threw the final 3.1 innings to earn the save. He allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Fairfield coach Josh Allison said it was great to get a win for the seniors. The highlight of the night for Allison was his team’s superb base running.

“We really pushed it, took some extra bases, steal a few and make things happen,” he said. “[It was] really great to see Tyler, Spencer, and Josh with a great offensive night. Austin took a pitch the other way tonight. All of the boys in the line up have been really hot hitters at some point this season, but we have yet to see them all going at once. The way we are swinging it in the games and cages, I believe we are really close to getting them all going at once.”

Allison said Hietpas’s command was a little shaky in the first when he allowed a run but he settled in after that.

“Wyatt came in the game in a clutch situation and slammed the door closed,” Allison said. “I really thought Josh [Dimmitt] did a great job tonight of blocking pitches in the dirt. Josh does a great job of making the pitchers feel comfortable out on the mound.”

The Trojans play Pella at home tonight. The junior varsity game starts at 5:30 and the varsity game follows.
