Two die in southeast Iowa house fire

Dec 11, 2013

ST. PAUL (AP) — Two people have died in a house fire in southeast Iowa.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Sholl said Audie Ellard, 59, and Karma Ellard, 52, were killed early Monday in the fire in St. Paul, a Lee County city of about 130 people. The Burlington Hawk Eye reported firefighters found both victims inside the house.

The fire was reported about 4:25 a.m. Firefighters found the house engulfed in flames when they arrived.

The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation of the fire.

“It’s standard operating procedure for us to request the assistance of the state fire marshal’s office when we have a fatality,” Sholl said. “We will assist them any way we can.”

A cause of the fire hasn’t been released but emergency crews said it might have started in a wood stove.

The victims were listed as the owners of the property, which was valued at about $20,000.

Fire crews from St. Paul, West Point, Denmark and Houghton responded to the blaze.
