Van Buren boys move past Holy Trinity

FORT MADISON — The Van Buren boys’ basketball team will get another shot at top-ranked Danville after trouncing another conference opponent, Holy Trinity, Thursday in Fort Madison.

The Warriors advanced past the second round of Class 1A District 9 with a 65-43 victory over host Holy Trinity. Danville moved on to face the Warriors with an 89-34 win over New London.

Van Buren was led on Thursday by Thomas Fitzsimmons, who scored a game-high 25 points from inside the paint. Teammates Will Mertens and Tanner Smith scored 12 points apiece.

Also for Van Buren, Garrett Saunders scored eight points, while Pedrick Garrett and Brandon Plecker contributed four points each.

Van Buren’s district semifinal match at undefeated Danville (22-0) will start at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
