Van Buren County dedicating Family Farm Art Tribute

Jul 13, 2017

KEOSAUQUA — A dedication party for the Van Buren County Family Farm Art Tribute will be 10 a.m. July 20 at the Roberts Memorial Building on the Van Buren County Fairgrounds in Keosauqua.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey will be the guest speaker.

The Family Farm Art Tribute is a sculpture dedicated to recognizing the value and importance of the family farm in Van Buren County and across the state. Funding for the project came from a partnership of the Villages Folk School and the Historic Hills Scenic Byways. Together they were awarded funds from the Iowa Arts Council’s Arts Build Community grant, an Our Town grant from the National Endowment of Arts, a Community Foundation of Van Buren County grant, and received donations by local community members and businesses. Support was also provided by the University of Iowa.

Many organizations joined in efforts with the Villages Folk School to conceptualize the project, but it was the work of a small committee that saw the tribute through to completion: Melinda Stockwell, Diana Hughell, Dorothy Gilbert, Connie Morris, Kim Steele-Blair, Carroll Michalek, Sheila Parsons, and Sparky Wellman. The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors and Van Buren County Agriculture Association provided support in moving forward with the construction in early spring 2016.

The Family Farm Art Tribute was created to celebrate the rich agricultural heritage of Van Buren County and to thank area farmers for their long-standing efforts. The sculpture stands as a beacon to restore pride in the county’s residents, and encourages people from all walks of life to learn more about agriculture and the tradition of the family farm as it continues on today.
