Van Buren drops contest to Louisa-Muscatine

LETTS — Van Buren got off to a good start with a 24-12 win over Cardinal on Aug. 25, but has since suffered a couple of setbacks in a 45-12 loss to New London on Sept. 1 and most recently a 36-6 defeat in Letts at the hands of Louisa-Muscatine.

The Warriors’ lone touchdown came on a 37-yard pass from Greg Wenke to Daniel Downey. Tayton Bartholomew led the team in catches with four, for 42 yards. JT Metcalf caught one pass for 6 yards. Cole Troutman caught one for 16 yards.

Wenke finished 7-14 in passing to go with 101 yards. His 37-yard touchdown completion to Downey was his longest of the night.

Donny Roberts was the Warriors’ go-to ball carrier. In 12 tries he gained 68 yards. Wenke ran for 12 yards on six carries. Connor Helling gained 4 yards.

Ty Hamburg led the team in tackles with 7.5, including a quarterback sack. Jaxon Thomas had 6.5 tackles and Greg Wenke had six. Aiden Franklin and Brycen Mineart each had 4.5.

Other Warriors recording tackles were Mitch Adkins, Jeremiah Baker, Corey Bunnell, Brody Caviness, Tony Davison, Daniel Downey, Gavin Powell, Roberts and Dalton Schmitt.

Wenke kicked off twice. His kicks went a combined 95 yards. He also punted four times for an average of 34.8 yards per punt.

Roberts returned two kickoffs for an average of 15 yards. Thomas returned one for 10 yards.

Aiden Franklin returned two punts for a total of 10 yards. Downey returned one for 10 yards.

Van Buren looks to right the ship against Wapello Friday on the road. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
