Van Buren hosts Wilton

By Justin Webster | Oct 13, 2017

Van Buren is ready to close out the 2017 season at home after traveling four of the last five weeks.

Their opponent this Friday will be 6-1 Wilton, whose lone loss came against fourth-ranked Iowa City Regina, 49-7. Wilton is projected to run the table, claiming the No.2 seed out of Class 1A-District 4.

If the Warriors plan to dam up the Beavers’ effective offense, they’ll need to start with Wilton’s dual-threat quarterback Jerome Mays. Mays has 21 touchdowns on the year with over 1,000 yards passing to go with almost 700 yards on the ground.

To pull off the possible upset, the Warriors need big games from seniors Greg Wenke and Donny Roberts. Wenke, a dual threat QB himself, is also a 60/40 pass-to-rush signal caller with almost 800 yards of total offense in 2017. Roberts, an awesome athlete and the primary tailback for Van Buren, has over 400 yards on the ground on 74 carries, with three rushing scores and a kickoff returned 65 yards for a touchdown.

Defensively, Jaxon Thomas leads the Warriors with 44 tackles including two sacks. Also in on most piles is Aiden Franklin and his 42 total tackles. Brycen Mineart is third on the team with his 30 accumulated stops, while Wenke is fourth with 27. Fifth in tackles is Ty Hamburg who has 26 to go with his team leading six sacks.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
