Van Buren sets hearing on budget

By Rusty Ebert, Ledger correspondent | Mar 07, 2018

KEOSAUQUA – The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors approved a public hearing for the proposed 2019 fiscal year county budget, set at $8,533,042, a decrease of $100,388 over the 2018 fiscal year budget.

A property tax asking to support the budget is proposed to be $3,026,327, an increase of $446,552 from the current year’s tax asking, following a net decline in tax asking of $70,065 from the 2014 fiscal year. Much of the increase is due to hiring an extra deputy, half of which will be paid for by the incorporated towns, and an increase in the road budget.

The tax levy for city taxpayers is proposed at $6.95 per $1,000 net valuation, a decrease of 23 cents per $1,000. The tax levy for rural taxpayers is proposed at $9.21, an increase of 37 cents.

A public hearing on the proposed budget will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the first floor District Courtroom in Keosauqua.
