Volunteers sought for monarch tagging programs

Two monarch tagging programs are planned. One Friday at Jefferson County Park and another Sunday at Lake Sugema.

The migrating monarchs have arrived early, so the Monarch Tagging program originally scheduled Tuesday evening at Jefferson County Park has been moved up to Friday.

Participants should meet at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Jefferson County Park Nature Center for a short introduction before heading into a prairie in the park.

Participants will be catching, tagging and releasing the monarch butterflies as they begin their annual migration south to Mexico.

Long pants and tennis shoes are recommended.

Preregistration is not required for this free program. All ages are welcome. but children under the age of 16 need to be supervised by an adult.

The Des Moines River Water Trail also is planning a free Monarch Migration program Sunday.

Participants must be at the north boat ramp of Lake Sugema at 5 p.m. to carpool to a selected location where nectaring plants are in bloom.

Nets and tags will be provided. Participants should wear long pants and tennis shoes.
