Fairfield High School’s select choir VOX spent Wednesday afternoon practicing its lineup of songs in the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.

That’s where the choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. tonight as the opening act for “Gobsmacked!,” a singing and beatboxing show. It will mark the third time in the past six years VOX has performed on the Sondheim stage either opening for or alongside professional singers and musicians.

Choir director Zach Reiter said the first time was in 2012 when VOX sang two songs with Street Corner Symphony. Two years later, the choir opened for Voca People.

“The students like coming here a lot,” Reiter said. “This place is awesome. I would do every concert here if I had my way.”

The choir director said the Sondheim has better acoustics than the high school auditorium, at least for choruses.

“Our auditorium is good for jazz choir because everyone has a mic, and it’s good for band because the surroundings deaden the sound,” he said. “But for a choir, you want some ring in the room.”

Reiter said things such as the curtains behind the stage and even the felt on the cushions absorb sound. He said the Sondheim’s seats are made of different material than those in the auditorium, and he notices the difference when listening to the choir, especially the baritones and basses, whose voices don’t carry like the altos and sopranos.

“That’s why I have to yell at the men to be louder,” Reiter said, adding that low notes must be sung louder to be heard as well as high notes. “The audience doesn’t know the science behind why we’re not hearing the low notes as well, they just think, ‘I don’t really hear the men.’ Men always have to work harder to be heard, but I tell them I don’t care.”

VOX was practicing several songs Wednesday that it might perform for tonight’s concert. For the song “I’ve Got the Music in Me,” every member of the choir has a solo. The boys practiced “Good Night Sweetheart” while the girls ran through “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from the movie “Mulan.” The group rehearsed Foreigner’s “Cold as Ice,” Britney Spears’s “Toxic” and “One Day I’ll Fly Away” from Moulin Rouge.

Reiter hasn’t decided which songs to sing. Complicating matters is that a few members of the choir will perform in tonight’s varsity boys’ basketball game in Solon. It’s a testament to how busy high school students are that they can’t attend all of the extracurricular activities they want.
