WAYLAND — Volleyball season is officially upon us as eight Southeast Iowa teams gathered in Wayland on Monday night for the first tournament of the year.

Two pools of four teams played a round robin tournament to set up the championship and third place games. Wapello defeated Van Buren to take the tournament title and Pekin took third over Centerville.

WACO, Columbus, Van Buren and Centerville made up Pool A. Van Buren went 6-0 through pool play, beating WACO 21-10 and 21-1, Columbus 21-12 and 21-11, and Centerville 21-11 and 21-8.

“We were very efficient during those first three matches,” said Warrior head coach Matt Zeitler. “In the championship game, we faced Wapello. They have a big girl who’s going to Western Illinois next year, a first team all-stater. She was a presence.”

The Warriors lost the championship match 21-9, 21-14.

Zeitler was very pleased with how his girls played, particularly since they’re so young. The Warriors started five sophomores: Selena Sayre, Madison Bartholomew, Logan Schmidt, Taryn Scheuermann, and twins Chloe and Grace Davidson.

Freshman Elizabeth Manning also gave an impressive performance as she collected 42 digs in four matches.

“For a freshman, that’s unbelievable,” Zeitler said. “That’s what really good, upper class liberos get.”

Centerville had to battle for second in the pool. The Big Reds scrapped to pick up a win over WACO (21-17, 21-23, 15-13) and Columbus (22-20, 19-21, 15-6). WACO took down Columbus 21-14 and 21-16 to take third.

Pool B was made up of Wapello, Pekin, West Burlington and Sigourney. It was tight all night in that group, with a handful of games going into the third set.

Wapello swept Sigourney 21-8 and 21-14 but the Arrows had to claw to victory in their other two pool play games. Wapello outlasted Pekin (21-7, 15-21, 15-12) and West Burlington (14-21, 21-19, 9-15) to go 3-0 in the pool.

Pekin pulled out two close games against Sigourney, 22-20 and 21-19. The Panthers also nipped West Burlington (19-21, 21-18, 15-13) to earn their spot in the third-place contest.

West Burlington did pick up one victory, dropping Sigourney 21-15 and 21-14 to place third in Pool B.

Pekin and Centerville went into three sets in the third-place game. Pekin took game one, 21-17, Centerville bounced back with a 21-15 win and the Panthers blew out the Big Reds, 15-1, in the deciding and final third game.
