Warrior boys’ track ties for Tuesday title

■ Cardinal ends up third with 118-point tally.

BLOOMFIELD — Van Buren scored 126 points during Tuesday’s Mustang Relays to earn a share of the Class A team title with Scotland County (Mo.).

Thomas Fitzsimmons came through with a win in the mile run (5:08.30) to help the Warriors’ cause, and long distance teammate Brayden Starnes followed suit in the open-800 (2:14.15). Van Buren also scored a victory in the 4x800 relay (9:03.17).

Van Buren received second-place times from the shuttle hurdle relay (1:14.50) and 4x200 (1:41.96). Garrett Saunders was runner-up in the 400 at 1:03.82, and Wyatt Cole rounded out the team’s second-place finishes with a 2:16 in the 800.

Also competing Tuesday in Class A competition was Cardinal, which finished third in the team race scoring 118 points. The Comets earned four wins in events along with six runner-up finishes.

Tyler Albert crossed the finish line in 16.29 seconds in the 110-high hurdles for the team’s lone individual victory. The sophomore also was on the winning shuttle hurdle relay with Neil Urtado, Sam Pedersen and Justin Conger. The foursome was clocked at 1:09.71 for a five-second victory.

Other victories came from the 4x200 team of Cody Carter, Nathan Yeager, Cole Campbell and Blake Wright (1:38.18); plus the distance medley team made up of Campbell, Yeager, Quinn Honomichl and Miguel Santiago (4:06.03).

Cardinal’s Ryan Cale was second in the 3200 with a time of 11:40, Albert finished runner-up in the long jump at 17-feet, 5.5-inches and Honomichl placed second in the 400-dash at 56.80 ticks. Urtado, Carter, Yeager and Brandon Potts steered the 4x100 to a second-place finish (48.84), as did the team of Honomichl, Wright, Carter and Albert in the 4x400 (3:52.94).

Weather permitting, both Cardinal and Van Buren will be back on the track today at the Denny White Relays in Mount Pleasant.
