NEW LONDON — Van Buren girls’ basketball coach Matt Zeitler will take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day of the week.

That’s what he got in his team’s return from the holiday break Tuesday. The Warriors scored their second lowest point total of the season, yet they still managed to pull out a 39-26 road win over New London.

“We couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn in the first half. It was your typical deal starting back up from a long break,” said Zeitler. “But a win is a win, and we’ll take it.”

It was the Warriors’ first game in 21 days, and in the early going it showed.

New London held the Warriors to 17 points in the first half and led by one at the intermission.

The Warriors took the lead back after halftime, however, thanks to its pressure on defense. Van Buren held New London to five points in the third quarter and just three in the fourth.

“We went to the full-court press in the second half, and I think it gave us some energy,” said Zeitler.

Van Buren led 25-23 headed into the final period, and they opened the fourth with sophomore Kaitlyn Johnson hitting two treys to give Van Buren its first sizable advantage. Johnson ended up with a team-high 14 points, four 3s and five assists.

Also for the Warriors, Hanna Haynes had a triple-double with 13 points, 11 boards, 11 blocks and seven steals; Payten Hughes scored six points with five rebounds and three steals; and Jordan Billups finished with six points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The Warriors (9-2, 7-2 SEISC South) continue a busy week Thursday with a makeup game vs. Cardinal. They then will host Harmony on Friday and Davis County Saturday.
