Eighth-grader Kenady Waugh made a dent in the scoreboard in her first at-bat Monday.

In her second, Waugh made Trojan softball history.

The eighth-grader whacked home runs in each of her first two career trips to the batter’s box, sparking the Fairfield softball team to a pair of 10-run rule wins in its season opener vs. Davis County in Fairfield.

“I don’t think anyone expected her to hit two home runs in her first two at-bats, but I was sure glad when she did,” said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield, who added the accomplishment might be a first in the history of Iowa prep softball.

“I’ve never seen that. I’m guessing in the history of Iowa softball, it’s never happened or rarely has happened,” said Bradfield. “And it was against a good pitcher.”

Fairfield beat Davis County 10-0 in the five-inning first game and claimed the nightcap 12-2, also in five innings.

Waugh, who finished her first game going 2-for-2 with four RBI and three runs scored, hit the first of two shots in the first inning to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Her second homer plated three runs in the third inning to hand Fairfield a 4-0 advantage.

“Kenady ... really got us going in the doubleheader. I think [Davis County starter Riley] Eakins lost a lot of her steam after that second home run, and we rolled from there,” Bradfield said.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, senior Katie Anderson hit an RBI single to start things off, and a Davis County error scored two more runs. Madison Roberts had a one-out, two-run single to push Fairfield’s lead to 9-0, and McKenna Ledger capped the six-run inning with an RBI walk.

In addition to Waugh, Roberts was 2-for-2 with two RBI and Anderson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the first game.

Starter Alli Deao threw five innings of three-hit ball to earn the shutout. The ninth-grader fanned five.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Fairfield scored four runs in the first inning and led 7-2 after three. The Trojans put the game away for good in the fourth inning, with another five runs scored.

“That second game was never in doubt from that first inning,” Bradfield said.

Waugh continued her hot start in the nightcap going 2-for-3 with a double, ending the first twinbill of her career with four hits, two home runs, a double and five runs batted in.

Roberts smacked a three-run opposite field home run to the concession stand. Mackenzie McClure, who finished up her track season two days earlier at the state meet, scored three runs, and Sydney Burnett had a double and scored twice.

Senior pitcher Haley Grunwald pitched the five-inning complete game for the Trojans, giving up four hits while striking out two.

Fairfield (2-0) hosts a twinbill vs. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Friday.
