Waverly installing barriers due to minor flooding

May 21, 2013

WAVERLY (AP) — Officials plan to install flood barrier in Waverly to hold back water from the Cedar River.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports city officials plan to install so-called HESCO barriers early Tuesday on Seventh Avenue Southeast.

The barriers are essentially large boxes, made of a collapsible wire-mesh frame with a waterproof lining. The frames are assembled on site, and filled with dirt or gravel. They were used as defensive walls by soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Waverly doesn't expect widespread flooding, but southeast parts of the city and parts of Bremer County could see minor flooding because of heavy rain in the Upper Cedar River watershed.

Flooding in the city should peak between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
