Tuesday afternoon the Fairfield girls’ basketball team met to discuss a tragedy in the Trojan community and sort out their feelings as a group before traveling to Eldridge for their 7 p.m. tipoff with defending champion and No. 4 ranked North Scott. After a long cry and a somber first half of their bus ride, the team started to listen to music and focus on basketball as they neared their destination.

At the Trojans’ request, the state allowed black ribbons to be worn on the left shoulder of the girls’ jerseys to acknowledge the tragedy.

Head Coach Brian Witzenburg’s team struggled once the game started, trailing by seven points after the first quarter, but Fairfield’s defense kept wearing down the Lady Lancers and the Trojans went into the half tied at 25 points a piece.

The second half was much better offensively, with Fairfield going on a 7-0 run to start the third period and they held a 38-29 lead going into the final eight minutes. North Scott did pull within a point midway through the fourth quarter, but the Trojans made eight free throws in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Three Trojans scored in double figures with Nicole Buch totaling a team-high 18 points, while Shay Drish had 14 and her sister added 11.

As region five champion, No. 14 Fairfield is joined in their first state tournament appearance since 1990 with champions from region one: No.9 LeMars; region two: No. 7 Mason City; region three: No. 5 Center Point-Urbana; region four: No.1 Marion; region six: No. 15 Pella or No. 3 Grinnell; region seven: No. 6 Boone; and region eight: No. 2 Lewis Central.

The state tournament is Monday through March 3 with Fairfield expected to play either Monday night or Tuesday morning, depending on their slot in the eight- team bracket.
