Why I’m voting for Mary Stewart

By Cheryl Fusco Johnson | May 31, 2018

To the editor:

Mary Stewart and Ed Malloy are competing in Iowa State Senate District 41’s Democratic primary race.

They’ve both chosen to run positive campaigns! Both these public servants are honest people who exhibit great personal strengths and admirable integrity. I hadn’t intended to write a public letter regarding which candidate earned my vote. Ron Blair’s May 17th Letter to the Editor in The Fairfield Ledger compelled me to share my opinion.

Like Mary Stewart and Ed, Ron’s worked hard for decades to improve the lives of people around him. I deeply respect Ron. I’m saddened by his decision to disparage Mary Stewart in his letter.

During the past 12 months, I’ve spent lots of time with Mary. She’s smart, funny, a great listener, a real people person, and above all super hardworking. This past year, Mary’s put thousands of miles on her white pickup ferreting out every corner of Iowa State Senate District 41 to listen to Iowans and learn what they most need and want.

Mary’s a woman of vision who’s accomplished great things. During her 33-year career as Dean of Academic Services at Indian Hills Community College, Mary Stewart developed and implemented successful programs for a 10-county region. Thus, contrary to Ron’s assertions, Mary does in fact have the know-how and the myriad state contacts, friends, and legislative associates to accomplish great things.

Economic development was an integral part of Mary’s job. One of the programs she developed was Indian Hills Annual Diversity Conference. (I’ve attended this conference; it’s great!)

The Democratic primary is June 5. Mary Stewart is my choice for Iowa State Senator. She has broad support throughout all four counties of State Senate District 41. Fellow Democrats, I urge you to vote for her, too.
