Wind hinders cleanup after towboat sinks

Nov 29, 2013

LECLAIR (AP) — Strong winds have hindered the effort to clean up oil and diesel fuel that spilled into the Mississippi River after a towboat sank near eastern Iowa.

U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Colin Fogarty tells the Quad-City Times that strong winds Wednesday night pushed oil out of a containment area on the river.

Fogarty says workers were able to recapture most of the oil and fuel by late Thursday morning, and they will continue working over the next several days to remove it from the river.

The Stephen L. Colby towboat sunk near LeClaire on Monday after striking a submerged object, and the crew escaped safely. The crash investigation will likely take months.

Salvage crews are expected to arrive Friday and begin working to recover the towboat.
