WindSync performs for FMS

On Thursday morning, most of the FMS students were thinking about what they were going to be doing the next day ... the start of spring break!

But the fifth- through eighth-grade band students were seated in the middle school cafetorium hearing the fantastic musical sounds of Windsync, a woodwind quintet from the Houston area.

The experienced musicians dazzled our young musicians with beautiful tone quality, amazing technique, and a program that was entirely memorized. They performed both classical and modern genres, featured all members of the ensemble, and functioned as not only polished performers, but excellent teachers.

The group introduced themselves and their instruments to an arrangement of “Hoedown,” from Copland’s Rodeo, which was both entertaining and informative.

They discussed how playing in a chamber ensemble is different from playing in a full band, and taught the students some techniques to use in their next practice session or rehearsal. They were engaging performers and eloquent speakers.

Their closing piece, which had a mariachi flair to it, had the students tapping their feet and clapping along. We are so fortunate that our band students were able to hear this group and learn from them!
