Winner, Winner! 10th straight win breaks 10 year drought for Fairfield boys

The Fairfield boys’ basketball team won their first playoff game since the end of the George W. Bush administration, defeating the Washington Demons for the third time this season with a 57-36 victory Monday night in Solon.

Mick Flattery was the head coach of the boys team in 2008 when the Trojans won their last postseason contest, and said “It’s great to get that monkey off of our programs’ back.”

Flattery added that leading scorer Collin Breen, “really attacked the basket tonight,” on his way to 14 points and two blocks, and “it was good having three guys score in double figures,” as Austin Simpson and Carson Crile each had 11 points as well. The junior Simpson also had nine rebounds and three assists, while Crile had seven boards, five deflections and two steals.

Drew Martin provided, “a lot of spark off the bench,” for the Trojans according to Flattery. The sophomore had nine points, five rebounds and two steals as the sixth man.

Other stat lines were: Tristin Waugh seven points, three rebounds and two assists; Dante Cingire three points, seven assists and two rebounds; and Cole Engle two points.

The Trojans are now 14-8 and have won 10 in a row. Their next game is Thursday when they return to Solon to face the 15-7 Spartans in the Class 3A substate 5 semifinal at 7 p.m.

“Thanks to the crowd that made the trip,” concluded Flattery. “We hope for even more of Trojan nation to cheer us on Thursday.”

Fairfield’s current 10-game winning streak spans more than a month after beginning with a 69-58 victory over Washington on Jan. 19 and includes five road wins, four home wins and a neutral-court win.

Mt. Pleasant will host Fort Madison Thursday at 7 p.m. with the winner facing the Fairfield versus Solon winner Feb. 26 at Muscatine in the substate final.
