PACKWOOD — As Pekin’s quarterback, senior Graham Wittrock was tasked with making throws to junior target Cade Millikin in the fall.

Friday — with a change of venue and a change of season — it was Millikin’s turn to feed Wittrock the ball.

Millikin had a team-high nine assists, and Wittrock was the beneficiary of many of those passes, pouring in a game-high 27 points to pace the Pekin basketball team to a 76-31 victory over Louisa-Muscatine in Packwood.

“This is our first year playing together, but it kind of all started in football when he was my receiver,” said Wittrock, who leads the Panthers with 19 points per game this season.

Behind Wittrock and Millikin, who also tallied five steals and 12 points, the Panthers barreled out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter. Although Louisa-Muscatine stayed closed in the second quarter, Wittrock ignited his team out of the locker room in the second half.

The senior Panther scored 10 straight points for his team to open the third quarter, knocking down two of his three treys in the three-minute stretch. The Panthers led 45-23 after Wittrock’s scoring spree, and they outscored the visitors 30-4 in the quarter to run away with a 64-26 advantage headed into the final period.

“My teammates were making passes and helping me get open. It was a team win,” added Wittrock, who scored 16 of his 27 points in the third quarter. “We’re clicking and working hard in the gym, and it takes time, but we’re coming together.”

Also for Pekin, junior Jared Bond scored 13 points and Seth Jensen had eight points, 10 boards and four blocked shots. Brody Long scored seven to go along with 10 rebounds and Christian Wittrock netted five.

And as good as Pekin was on offense, it may have been even tougher on the defensive end. The Panthers forced the visiting Falcons into 30 turnovers while holding them to a season-low point total.

The Panthers, who upped their record to 10-4 with the win, also played at Mediapolis Saturday and will visit IMS on Tuesday.
