To observe World Kindness Day, SunnyBrook Assisted Living residents reached out to a local girl battling pilocytic astrocytoma — a grade 1 benign tumor that cannot be fully removed without devastating consequences.

“We wanted to do something that our residents could get involved in for World Kindness Day,” said Ginny Hughes, marketing director at SunnyBrook.

SunnyBrook’s health services director, Sandra Vice, saw a post on Facebook about a local Fairfield girl, Gabrielle “Gabby” Ford, who has a brain tumor and noticed that Gabby had a goal of getting 1,500 get-well cards.

“So we asked all the residents of SunnyBrook Assisted Living to write a get-well card for Gabby,” said Hughes. “We were able to help her reach her goal!”

Hughes contacted Gabby’s mother, Mandy Ford, and they visited SunnyBrook so the residents and staff could present the cards and a gift bag to her.

The gift bag included a hat, scarf and gloves in her favorite color – pink – and a Visa gift card for her parents to use as needed.

“Mandy said Gabby loves giving ‘Gabby hugs,’ and she sure did,” said Hughes. “She gave everyone a hug, was singing songs, she was a complete joy.”
