Wright finishes second in 3000-meter run

Pekin’s Gwynne Wright ended her amazing sophomore season in 3000-meter run Thursday with a second place finish at the State Track & Field meet in Des Moines.

Wright’s time of 10:36.38 is 18 seconds better than her state qualifying time. The race winner, Rebekah Topham of Griswold, ran a 9:56.73, which is just 19-hundredths of a second from tying the state record. Pekin’s Taylor Lock finished 19th with the time of 11:29.06. Wright finished fifth and Lock earned 20th at last season’s state meet, and they will likely be back again next season as juniors.

Shelbie Williams finished second in the shot put with a toss of 38-08.50. Williams followed up her stellar shot put performance by finishing 21st in the discus Friday morning. Bridget Fritchen finished eighth in the discus with a throw that measured 109-03.

The Pekin girl’s 4x800-meter relay team, consisting of Taylor Reynolds, Shea Dahlstrom, Sloan Reighard and Whitney Horras, finished 19th with a time of 10:27.69.

Wright, Samantha Wright, Kaylee Linder and Sloan Reighard earned fifth in the distance medley Friday with the time of 4:20.73. This time was six seconds better than their state qualifying time and seven seconds better than Pekin did last season in this event.

The Pekin boys’ competed in many events Thursday as well. Chase Copeland kicked the day off by finishing 10th in the 100-meter dash. Copeland was just hundredths of a second from finishing eighth and moving onto the finals.

Eric Adam earned sixth in the shot put (49-03.00) and Jared Bond grabbed 13th with a throw of 46-10.50.

Cade Millikin, Austin Fariss, Ryan Millikin and Cole Reighard combined to finish 13th in the 4x800-meter relay with the time of 8:39.91. Van Buren earned 22nd in this race, with Garrett Saunders Wyatt Cole, Tom Fitzsimmons and Brayden Starnes combining to record the time of 8:49.99.

Colton Lanman got sixth (6-02.00) and Zac Conger got 14th (6-00.00) in the high jump Friday.

In other area action, Cardinal’s shuttle hurdle team comprised of Charlie Rachford, Justin Conger, Sam Pederson and Tyler Albert finished 21st in the Class 2A shuttle hurdle relay with the time of 1:02.92.
