Zahs to narrate Civil War-themed concert Sunday

Oct 21, 2013

WASHINGTON, Iowa — The sesquicentennial of the American Civil War will be observed with music, stories and readings from unpublished Civil War letters at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Washington Iowa Community Theater.

During “Seven Score and Ten,” music will be performed on antique musical instruments from the period — gut-strung guitar and wooden flutes, and performers will bring an Iowa perspective to the Civil War era, interspersing the music with conversation about the impact of the war. Included will be readings from Iowa letters paired with some of the earliest tunes published in Iowa.

Red Cedar Chamber will perform the music, and historian Michael Zahs will narrate.

The concert is part of the Washington Concert Association series of eight performances through 2013-14. Single or season tickets can be purchased at the door.
